Chapter 1: The Woman at the Stairs

The runway burned under the hard afternoon sun.
Heat shimmered above the rough asphalt. Dust moved in thin waves across the private airport as a row of black SUVs waited beside a white jet with no logo. The metal stairs were already lowered, shining sharply beneath the light.
Elena stood at the foot of those stairs in a simple gray uniform.
Her brown hair was tied low, slightly messy from the wind. A white apron rested over her dress, and flat shoes pressed against the hot ground. In one hand, she held a small document tray. In the other, she held tightly to her son.
Lucas was only seven.
His blue backpack hung from one shoulder, and his small fingers curled around Elena’s hand like he was afraid someone would pull him away.
In front of them stood Victoria.
She was elegant, expensive, and perfectly aware of it. Her silk dress shimmered in purple and blue streaks beneath the sun. Sunglasses dangled from one hand while the other rested on her hip.
She blocked the stairs like she owned the jet.
“Servants need to know their place and wait outside,” Victoria said.
The words cut through the dry runway air.
Elena lowered her eyes for a moment.
She did not answer immediately. Not because she was weak, but because Lucas was beside her. She could feel his hand tighten around hers.
“Mom,” Lucas whispered.
Elena squeezed his fingers gently.
“It’s okay,” she murmured.
Victoria smiled as if the whisper amused her.
Elena lifted her gaze.
“But the master himself asked me to bring Lucas here,” she said calmly.
Victoria’s expression barely changed.
“The master?” she repeated, as if the word tasted funny. “You mean Adrian?”
Elena stayed silent.
Victoria took one step closer.
Around them, two drivers near the SUVs glanced over. A security man at the edge of the runway looked away quickly. Nobody wanted to be involved. Nobody wanted to challenge a woman who looked like she belonged beside billionaires.
Victoria bent down in front of Lucas.
Her smile became falsely sweet.
“And you,” she said softly, adjusting the strap of his backpack, “must be confused.”
Lucas stepped back immediately, pressing into Elena’s side.
Victoria straightened and looked Elena up and down.
“Your father certainly has terrible taste in hiring people.”
Lucas’s face changed.
“My father doesn’t hire my mom,” he said.
The runway went strangely quiet.
Victoria blinked.
Then she laughed.
A short, cruel laugh.
“Oh, sweetheart,” she said. “Is that what she told you?”
Elena’s jaw tightened.
She looked down at Lucas and placed a hand lightly on his shoulder.
“Lucas,” she whispered, “don’t.”
But the boy’s eyes were already filling with anger and hurt.
Victoria turned back toward the stairs.
“The plane is for Adrian’s family and business guests,” she said. “Not for maids playing pretend.”
Elena’s face remained calm.
But inside, something ached.
She had worn the gray uniform for a reason.
Not because she was ashamed.
Not because she belonged below anyone.
Adrian had asked her to dress simply that day, to avoid press attention while Lucas traveled with him privately for the first time after months of security concerns.

But Victoria did not know that.
And Elena refused to explain herself to someone who had already decided she was nothing.
