Part 2: The Slam on the Sidewalk

What happened next would later be captured on two separate cell phone cameras by neighbors who had stepped onto their porches.

Those videos would eventually be seen by millions.

But in that moment, there was no viral footage.

Only boots hitting pavement.

Only Officer Pruitt climbing out of his cruiser.

Only the sickening sound of Marcus being slammed into the concrete.

The officer did not ask another question.

He did not issue another command.

He did not give any warning.

He grabbed Marcus by the back of his hoodie, spun him around, and drove him into the ground with the full force of a grown man.

Marcus’s chin hit the sidewalk.

His backpack skidded across the pavement.

His hands went up instinctively, not to fight, but to shield his face.

“Don’t move!” Pruitt shouted. “Stop resisting!”

But Marcus wasn’t resisting.

He had barely understood what was happening.

Caleb screamed.

It was raw and terrified, the sound of a child watching someone he loved being hurt.

“Marcus! Marcus, get up! Get UP!”

People began appearing on porches.

A woman in a bathrobe covered her mouth.

An elderly man two houses down stared for one second, then disappeared inside to call for help.

Pruitt pressed his knee into Marcus’s back and reached for his handcuffs with the confidence of a man who had never expected to answer for anything.

Marcus’s cheek burned against the cold concrete.

His breath came hard.

His little brother was crying.

And in that moment, Marcus did the only thing he could think to do.
