Part 2: The Woman at the Head of the Table

Twenty minutes later, the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor filled with quiet conversation.
Department heads reviewed reports.
Managers organized presentations.
Assistants distributed documents.
Everyone was waiting for one person.
The new interim chair.
The woman recently appointed to oversee the company’s largest restructuring project.
Then the doors opened.
The room immediately stood.
Evelyn Brooks entered.
She now wore a clean navy business dress beneath the same trench coat she had not bothered to replace.
She crossed the room calmly.
Took her seat at the head of the table.
And opened a file.
“Morning everyone,” she said.
“Let’s get to work.”
The meeting began.
Quarterly numbers.
Budget forecasts.
Expansion plans.
No one interrupted.
No one checked their phones.
Because everyone in the room understood something important.

She was leading it.
