Part 2: The Woman Who Did Not Break

Under the water, Emily opened her eyes.
For a moment, she remained still, listening to the muffled sounds above.
Then she pushed herself upward.
When she emerged, water streamed from her uniform. Her makeup was gone. Her hair had come partly loose.
But her expression had changed.
The embarrassment was gone.
In its place was something calmer.
Something far more dangerous.
Emily climbed out of the pool slowly.
No rushing.
No shouting.
No tears.
The crowd grew quieter.
Victoria noticed.
Her smile weakened slightly.
“Now everyone can see who you really are.”
Emily looked at her.
Then at Rachel.
Then around the crowd.
Several guests suddenly appeared uncomfortable.
Because unlike Victoria, Emily was not reacting the way they expected.
She was not humiliated.
She was not defeated.
She was thinking.
Emily took a few steps forward, water dripping onto the marble behind her.
The conversations stopped completely.
Even the servers stood still.
Then an older businessman near the back of the crowd recognized her.
His face drained of color.
He immediately straightened his posture.
And stepped aside.
Others noticed.
The mood shifted.
Subtly.
But unmistakably.
May you like
Victoria frowned.
“What?”
